Our Work

SERES is committed to supporting at-risk youth from low-income, marginalized and vulnerable groups. We give special attention to youth in frontline communities within Guatemala and El Salvador where intensifying climatic changes, increasing violence, growing income disparities and limited economic opportunities are making growing numbers of youth vulnerable to the influence of gangs, crime, migration and other impacts of social disintegration.

Our young changemakers are the unlikely leaders on the front lines of enormous political, social, environmental and economic challenges. Working to ensure “nothing about us without us,” we support our youth to develop 21st century leadership skills, build their citizen muscles, and become part of a rapidly-growing inclusive network of social entrepreneurs and change agents that are taking action to combat the most pressing public problems at the local, regional and international levels.

No one else in Central America’s Northern Triangle is addressing issues of youth opportunity, sustainability and migration like SERES, which is one of the reasons that SERES was one of only three organizations worldwide in 2015 to receive the UNESCO-Japan Prize for Education for Sustainable Development. As noted by the international jury assessing submissions, SERES methodology “reflects an approach which is unusually thorough and imaginative…leading to an impressive set of human skills, leadership competencies and attitudes…which accelerate societal transition towards sustainability and is truly transformative.”

SERES’ model is a catalyst for grassroots impact: our data shows that our programs have an exponential impact of  1:10, meaning that each young leader who graduates activates an additional 10 youth. Since 2015, SERES’ leaders has engaged over 30,000 people in local actions to build more peaceful and sustainable communities, all at a training cost of less than $400 per participant.

“No other institution or organization is offering such holistic and safe learning spaces as SERES does. Thanks for everything.”

Marta Vargas, SERES Ambassador

“SERES means a lot in my life. It’s a circle of friendship for learning, transformation and personal growth. It’s a place of trust and confidence. As a SERES facilitator, I get to transmit all of this to other people”

Wilson Sánchez, SERES Facilitator

“The tools that SERES teaches us help us to replicate the work in our communities…we can reach more people, empower more youth, and make our action plans at the local level known at the regional level.”

Julio Tojín, SERES Ambassador

“The spaces that SERES provides are places where we can be our full selves – the good and the bad – and that’s always something to appreciate. I feel valued because here it’s not your academic achievements that make a person, it’s the way you think and your ability to keep going…”

Gaspar Laines Juil

“I have felt included and connected from the minute that I became involved (in SERES). It has helped me grow in my own personal leadership. SERES never tells me what to do, but they support me to make the decisions that are right for me.”

Axel Salanic

“To feel that I’m a part of a movement at the level of UNESCO has confirmed for me that I am doing valuable things. I’m fortunate to belong to this global movement for action”

Antonio Cruz Sanchez, SERES co-founder
