Leadership

As an organization, SERES is committed to a culture of inclusion that fosters diversity and encourages everyone to strive towards leadership opportunities. As a result, we have strong female and local participation at all levels of the organization. Over 80% of staff positions, 75% of our leadership team, and more than 50% of our Board of Directors are comprised of women. In addition, SERES alumni have the opportunity to elect 4 youth representatives to the Board annually. These representatives serve for one year after which they have the opportunity to be elected to officer positions on the board.

“No other institution or organization is offering such holistic and safe learning spaces as SERES does. Thanks for everything.”

Marta Vargas, SERES Ambassador

“SERES means a lot in my life. It’s a circle of friendship for learning, transformation and personal growth. It’s a place of trust and confidence. As a SERES facilitator, I get to transmit all of this to other people”

Wilson Sánchez, SERES Facilitator

“The tools that SERES teaches us help us to replicate the work in our communities…we can reach more people, empower more youth, and make our action plans at the local level known at the regional level.”

Julio Tojín, SERES Ambassador

“The spaces that SERES provides are places where we can be our full selves – the good and the bad – and that’s always something to appreciate. I feel valued because here it’s not your academic achievements that make a person, it’s the way you think and your ability to keep going…”

Gaspar Laines Juil

“I have felt included and connected from the minute that I became involved (in SERES). It has helped me grow in my own personal leadership. SERES never tells me what to do, but they support me to make the decisions that are right for me.”

Axel Salanic

“To feel that I’m a part of a movement at the level of UNESCO has confirmed for me that I am doing valuable things. I’m fortunate to belong to this global movement for action”

Antonio Cruz Sanchez, SERES co-founder

Founding Story

SERES’s success proves that youth, regardless of personal circumstances, are powerful catalysts for positive change.

SERES was started in 2009 by Corrina Grace and Antonio Cruz Sánchez in their 20s, in response to the urgent need for the large youth population in Central America to learn the skills to cope with the growing instability and uncertainty that they were facing in their communities as a result of political unrest, economic stagnation and climate change. Using leadership, empowerment and education as its tools, this grassroots organization started a process to mobilize young people to take action to address the most pressing environmental challenges in their communities. Hundreds of action plans  to address problems such as deforestation, food insecurity, contamination of watersheds and environmental health problems took root. Less than a decade later, SERES is one of the leading organizations worldwide that works to combat complex social, environmental and economic challenges by cultivating and catalyzing young leaders to take action at the local, national and international levels.
