Dr. Miller is an Adjunct Professor at Framingham University, Consulting Partner with Empowerment Unlimited and an internationally renowned education and facilitator. She is also the currently serving as Treasurer of Asociación SERES.

Upon retiring from Colegio Maya, where Dr. Miller was the director for 9 years, she made a decision to evolve her retirement into an invitation to be more present, more human and more full of grace and thankfulness.

Sherry has been a passionate advocate for SERES since first meeting the founder in a small coastal community in 2012 with two SERES alumni. Since then, she has supported SERES growth and development with her tireless energy, her deep belief in helping youth find their voices and empowering them to lead their communities, her passion for Appreciative Inquiry and Appreciative Leadership and her hope to be a part of caring for our planet in the best possible ways we can.

 

Kathy Ruhf

Secretary and Board Member, SERES Global

Kathy has spent most of her professional life on sustainability issues, specifically in relation to food systems and farming. She currently works as the Executive Director of Land for Good, a US 501c3 organization that supports small-scale farmers, landowners and communities to navigate the complex challenges of land access, tenure and transfer. Kathy is also a Senior Fellow on the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group and a consultant to various agencies, foundations and NGOs on a wide range of sustainable agriculture and food systems topics.

Kathy brings her practical experience  in planning, site development, capacity building and training along with a deep appreciation for sustainability education and sustainable land use experience to her work as a Champion with SERES.

 

Alissa Harrington

Treasurer and Board Member, SERES Global

Alissa Harrington is a change-maker from Oakland, CA by way of Wisconsin. She has over 10 years of experience in a diverse range of roles aimed at making the world a more sustainable place including solar materials research scientist, social entrepreneur, and energy efficiency evaluator. Alissa brings these skills and passion for sustainability and spreadsheets to her work as a SERES Champion.

Board Member, SERES Global

Jacob Carter is an International Education and Nonprofit Consultant and is currently completing a doctoral program at the Center for International Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has over ten years of experience working in the education sector in Guatemala and recently returned from a 10-month Fulbright-Clinton Fellowship conducting research for the Guatemalan Ministry of Education on their National Reading Program. As an Education Specialist, he works in Spanish and in English; designs and manages organizational change processes; writes literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and analytical documents in both academic and professional contexts, and has over a decade of hands-on experience working with and serving as a board member for various educational nonprofits.

 

Alia

Alia Whitney-Johnson

Board Member, SERES Global

Alia Whitney-Johnson is the founder of Emerge Global, a social enterprise in Sri Lanka that equips girls who have survived sexual abuse with the business acumen, financial capital, and life skills to lead healthy, self-sufficient lives. Using jewellery creation as a tool for education, art therapy, and financial empowerment, Emerge has enabled more than 550 young women to launch businesses, finance education, build homes, and mentor other young women. Emerge was selected as Boston’s Small Charity of the Year (2010, Classy Awards) and has been featured on the front page of the Boston Globe’s fashion section, in Glamour Magazine, on Good Morning Sri Lanka, and as the cover story of Sri Lanka’s largest pop culture magazine. In 2013, Emerge was the featured case study in the book “Do Good Well,” a #1 Amazon bestseller with reviews from Muhammad Yunus and Nicholas Kristof. Emerge has been recognized by the American Ambassador and Miss Sri Lanka, and has successfully transitioned to local leadership in Sri Lanka.

Elizabeth Pellecer Rivera

President, Asociación SERES

Born and raised in Mixco, Guatemala, Elizabeth Pellecer Rivera obtained her undergraduate degree in eco-tourism from Universidad de Valle Guatemala in 2010, and graduated with a master’s degree in international development studies from Palacký University Olomouc in the Czech Republic in 2016. She now works in health studies, investigating social and communications aspects of the field.

From her experiences working in community tourism and environmental projects, Elizabeth has learned the importance of a local focus in development initiatives, because each context is different, along with the importance of empowerment in achieving sustainability.

Aside from her work, Elizabeth’s interests include traveling, music, and spending time with family and friends.

 

Ana Isabel Cifuentes

Vice President, Asociación SERES

Anisa Cifuentes was born and raised in Guatemala City, Guatemala. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology, with concentrations in Sociology and Art and Design, from Purdue University in Indiana in 2006. In 2016 Anisa graduated with a master’s in human resource management and organizational development from Universidad Galileo.

She currently works as the Education Manager at Glasswing International, directing educational programs in Guatemalan public schools. In 2013 she co-founded Café Pendiente Guatemala, the Guatemalan branch of an international initiative which mobilizes people buying coffee at participating businesses to purchase an additional coffee to be given to someone in need.  Her professional and academic experience has been focused on the social action and non-profit sector.

Anisa is also a certified yoga instructor for children and adults since 2015.
